Whether you plan to head out for a couple of hours or several days. Wild Taranaki recommends everyone pack the 10 essential items every time you head into the Egmont National Park.

Most of the time you will never use all the 10 essentials on any given hike, but when you do need any of these items you will be grateful as in the event of an emergency these items can save lives. 

When hiking on Mount Taranaki, leave your intentions with a trusted contact regardless of where you go or how long. Leaving you intentions with someone can help emergency services locate you in the event you get lost or injured.

 

1. APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR 

Appropriate Footwear

If you are going on a short-day hike that doesn’t involve a heavy pack then trail shoes are a great option. For longer hike where you are carrying a heavier load you’ll want to investigate hiking boot as they will offer you the best support.

 

2. MAP 

Map

Although the Egmont National Park is a relatively small park it is always good to take a map to help tell you where you are, how far you have gone and help you you’re your campsites or an emergency exit. While GPS units are very useful, always carry a map as a backup.

 

3. EXTRA WATER

Packing enough water for your trip and unexpected events is highly recommended. Without enough water your body simply can’t perform as well and make you susceptible to hypothermia and altitude sickness.

 

4. EXTRA FOOD 

Extra Food

Any number of things could happen hiking that could lead you being out longer than expected. Extra food will keep your energy and moral up in the event you get lost, injured and encounter difficult terrain.

 

5. RAIN GEAR & EXTRA CLOTHING

The weather in Taranaki is so unpredictable. Dressing in layers allows you adjust to changing weather and or activity levels. Try and avoid cotton clothing and always carry a hat.

 

6. SAFETY ITEMS 

Safety Items

The most important thing to consider is how to stay warm. A space blanket is small and lightweight but help to keep you warm in an emergency. If you get lost you’ll also find a whistle will be far more effective than using your voice to call for help. And just in case you’re out later than planned, a flashlight is a must have item.

 

7. FIRST AID KIT 

First Aid

Over the counter first aid kits are an important item for any hiker. Make sure you check the content is suitable and ensure any personal medication has been pack before you leave.

 

8. KNIFE OR MULTI-PURPOSE TOOL 

Knife

A small multi-tool is handy when out in the bush. These enable you to perform a range of repairs while on your trip.

 

9. SUNSCREEN & SUNGLASSES 

Sunglasses

New Zealand has some of the strongest UV rays in the world so when hiking above the treeline you’ll need to be prepared with sunscreen and sunglasses to prevent sunburn.

 

10. BACKPACK 

Backpack

If you not use to hiking you’ll want something comfortable with the features designed to keep you hiking smarter. Don’t forget a rain cover and keep all the essentials in your pack so you can hit the trails safely.
