This one-day walk across the Northern side of Mount Taranaki takes you on a 19km trek through a variety of landscapes, from the montane forest and sub-alpine scrub, beneath towering lava columns and across active erosion scars, and a scenic alpine wetland with unique flora. Classic bands of vegetation have been zoned by altitude making the trip a lesson in botanical adaptation. After crossing the unique Ahukawakawa Swamp, the climb up on to the Pouakai Plateau offers breath taking views of the journey so far, with Mount Taranaki as a backdrop, as well as the opportunity for the classic shot of the mountain reflecting in the tarns on top of the plateau.
